Wall Drug's Sam the Piano Playing Gorilla

Back in 2004 we met Sam the Gorilla at Wall Drug, the famous roadside drug store in Wall, South Dakota. For a quarter, Sam will play the piano and sing a tune! This is cheesy fun!

LOL! Yes, I have that barbershop gorilla wedged in my head from old times, and I remember he was in pretty poor condition. Haha, they should keep him hanging up somewhere just for nostalgia.

The Sam I remember wore something you might see a member of a barber shop quartet wearing, and he was more just a Halloween gorilla suite on a mechanical frame. By the time I got to see him though, the gorilla suit was rotting and his metal skeleton was showing through, making him look like something from a low budget terminator like movie. It was fantastic!

I went to Wall Drug when I was a little kid and I remember the piano playing gorilla.

The one in this video looks different than I remember, and I think the song was different too.

I saw Sam back about twelve years ago, then he was gone when we went by about five years back. This video must be a new, high-tech replacement, since I remember the old one having a white jacket, and more of a Fats Domino or Jerry Lee Louis kind of vibe. Good to see Sam up and running, though, bless his little heart.
