@martenLij have you tried the latest kernel 3.0.0? linus actually added alot of new drivers so its worth looking into. (they arent proprietary but they get thee job done)
@martenLij well what is the second digit? That's the number you want to look at. 1-4 is budget, so those suck. 5-7 are consumer, so they have some good features. 8-9 is hobbies level so they come with the works as well as power.
@charliegirl6 I do think it's the other way around to be honest. Mac OS X has had a LOT "inspiration" from the Linux counterpart.

@rifall i need to say, ive got a old laptop somewhere and it works great with linux :)
my ati card @ my desktop is just too new .
and ati drivers mostly sucks but ive got a HD 6xxx so i need the ati drivers ive i want 3d support

@martenLij That's a point, try to add nomodeset at kernel line, it helped me instantly... Opensource drivers AND 3D :D
