China's economy is expanding at an astounding rate - but its waistlines are too.

The food of the streets tells the story of a culture torn between tradition and modernity, the customs of an ancient past competing with the convenience age of the new. What will survive and what will be lost? In a China which has gone within two generations from mass starvation to mass obesity, what does the future hold?

  • @KatiushaVN4 That was ONE company that added carboard to the bbq pork mixture in a steamed bun. The bun itself is actual wheat, wouldn't you think people can tell if they're eating paper instead of actual wheat? I've tried Pho in vietnam, it's loaded with msg and sometimes the beef tastes off because its been sitting around too long. Look at your own country before you slander others.

  • @JL2813

We Vietnamese don't make fake foods (fake egg and fake rice like Chinese do). Even steamed buns in China is made out of cardboard instead of meat. What a fool!

  • @KatiushaVN4 If by fake food you mean food flavoured with "flavour enhancers" such as MSG and chicken powder instead of real spices/garnishes then yes. However you're Vietnamese aren't you? I've been to Vietnam and you people use those things too.

  • Come on, no one actually EATS the kind of food in the Wanfujing market regularily. Even for most Chinese people it's adventurous.

  • Jj

  • In 2007 my family went to the exact same market. My brother had a big starfish and puked for 3 straight days.

Make sure whatever you eat is well-done! Lesson learned! :)
