  • Nope. Predates computers. They used to do this by hand in the dark old days of libraries. It was also used to give a single search term for example to 'Mark Twain' and 'Samuel Clemens'. The library has to point to a single record that is the Authority Record. You as the user eventually find the Authority and that points you back to all the children records. A.K.A., Authority Control. The zillion spellings of William Shakespeare is another example. One record to rule them all.

  • It's really good that people are thinking ahead with these databases. It's one of the big problems now that we have so many resources at our disposal: how to organize them so it's useful not overwhelming.
