Christ, Light in Darkness'--2
A Tenebrae Service for Good Friday was presented by the adult choir and instruments of Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in Garden City, SC, Friday night, April 2. Under the direction of Kim Holt, this Trenebrae service followed the medieval tradition of Christian worship, in which the final hours of the Lord's life are experienced by the faithful through word, music and symbolism written by Patrick Liebergen, who gave meaning to Tenebrae through "darkness" or "shadows," as candles are extinguished one by one so participants fell the impending void and grief of Christ's death on the cross. The relighting of the Christ candle is the sign of hope and gives assurance that Christ will rise from the dead. Songs included Beautiful Savior, Lord of Salvation, O Lord of Sorrow, What Love, Crucify Him, O Sacred Head Surrounded, O Lamb of God Most Holy, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, Final Prayers at the Cross and Love Held Him to the Cross. Narrators were Pam Fellers and Steve Reed, and readers were Bob Alexander and Sam Sox. Violins were played by Nathan Salvo and Wesley Trentachosta. Oboe was performed by Cindra Marshall; digital flute by Judy Barrett, solo by Joyce Conley piano and digital harp by Director Holt. Shepherd of the Sea Pastor, Rev. Richard Webber, gave the greeting and led a short responsive reading, including the words, "Jesus Christ is the light of the world...
Dedicated to the work of Directer Kim Holt, who multi-tasks with choral direction while playing the piano or the organ.
