Shows how I setup my Kleinbauer "7th Sojourn" home-built CNC router to cut out a long X-axis brace for a Joe's 2006 router build. My 7th has a 15" X travel limit so I had to break the Autocad drawing for the brace into 4 15" parts. In this video I use a touch-off plate, setup a jig, and run each part on Mach3. Cut is made with a 1/8" 2 flute carbide end mill at between 20 and 30 ipm. Material is 1/2" MDF. Spindle is a RotoZip.

  • I am currently cutting out the same part (X Axis Torsion Box Long Run Brace) for my machine. I am using my school's CNC which has a 35" X axis so I decided to break the CAD in half rather than in 15" segments.

  • Nice! You'll be able to cut the a lot of the parts, like the X axis torsion box pipe supports, in one program with 35". Is your machine wide enough on the Y axis to cut several parts at once?

  • Great video, a very clever procedure and excellent work on the home made Z-Touchpad. What diameter bit/bit type are you using?

  • Thanks! I used an 1/8" carbide 2-flute flat mill.

  • Very informative explaining in Detail the process. I would love to find out how to program and make the touchoff device for zeroing the Z Axis. Is the touchoff program available in mach3

  • Youtube won't let me post links but you can search Artsoft forums for "Set Z to zero automatically?Auto tool zero questions" and look for the macro code by Scott Worden.

  • if i was u i would cut out that design 1 time on the cnc get a router and clamp that under the real board drill some pilot holes and cut it with a hand router it would do each cut in like 20seconds but if you never need the template again its a waste of mdf board

  • Nice! I especially like the touch off.

What kind of RotoZip did you use and are you happy with its performance?

I just got the plans for this machine and hope to begin my "sojourn" soon.

  • yeah the Y is 30". So I was able to cut out 4 of the X-Axis pipe supports at once.

  • Then you have to configure Mach3 ports and pins to enable the "Probe" on pin 10. The most difficult part was using the Artsoft Screen4 program to drop a button and 2 DROs onto the bottom of the screen and assigning the button click to the macro code (by Scott Worden)
