@ssssquare I don't know if they are friends in real life, but I know that they worked together before the movie, for an australian radio show. They had to simulate a sex scene in a bath and they said they were laughing during all the scene. So I think they know each other quite well and are friends, but I have no proof^^

In the book their friendship is very strong, and stay after the war. For example, for Pippin's marriage Eowyn and Faramir send him presents, and Pippin calls his son Faramir.
