Joe Way Paddle makes a splash
The fourth Newquay Joe Way Paddle for life was hailed another success after a great turn out.
The original Paddle for Life started after lifeguards from Fistral Beach held a Joe Way memorial paddle to raise money for charity in 2008. Joe is the inspirational little boy who touched people's lives around the country and beyond. His story of hope and fighting against all the odds with a cheeky smile has made what could have been the worse of times the best of times.
This year's event saw nearly 200 paddlers of all ages and abilities taking part in the 200m and 1km fun paddles to do their bit to raise money for some of the 20 charities now supported by the Joe Way appeal.
This years front man Karl Fice-Thomson and team organized the heats whilst entertaining the crowds with the back up of the Lusty Glaze lifeguards, current English surf champion Tom Butler and Nicholas Pendreich
Tom Butler who is an ambassador for the Paddle for life said "we had a great set up with the numbered wrist bands, communication between the beach, sea and checking in with Julia was spot on, Will from Lusty Glaze did a great job keeping us informed which enabled us to have another safe and fun event".
Once again local businesses and charities Perranporth signs, Hutton hire, Gould radio, Skinners Ales, Bookers, coastal crepes, ultra entertainment, beach sumo, Cornwall hospice care, Cornwall blind, Precious lives, catch a wave and Speedy hire supported the event which runs at zero cost. The event also has a huge on line following and prizes where donated by Relentless, Etnies, Gul, Bodhis Resturant, Lusty Glaze, tbsurfing.com, Skindog surfboards and indo board Europe.
Titan the robot stole the show and the locally run global business pulled all the stops out with a great set in the middle of the harbour.
The whole event was streamed live across the world by Tiger24 with Anton Roberts organizing the sound system and on line production with his team. Mayor Andy Hannan said "It was a great event and with the on line streaming a real showcase for Newquay".
Paddle supporter signer James Morrison sent a video message of support on line and Dave Hughes Paddle mirror raised £500 at the auction and was bought by local businessman Nick Bryant, from Tolcarne Beach.
Sue Butler from Newquay surf life saving club who knew Joe said "The kids really get excited about this event and they all made a real effort in the 1km paddle".
The event raised well over £2,000.00 with money still coming in which means this years total is nearly £5000.00 and the overall total for the Joe Way appeal is £95,000.00 over the last three years, you can still donate by going to Joe's website.
Matt Way (Joe's Dad) said "We are really grateful for all the effort the Paddle team and businesses have put into this years event. Everyone worked really hard to make it a fun and safe day and I know Joe would be really proud of what people have achieved in his memory".
The winning team of the RNLI Joe Way memorial paddle were Porth beach in a highly competitive battle between the RNLI beach lifeguards.
