When I heard about Chip's final run, which was on October 29, I ventured over to Rootstown to go catch him. It was about 2:30pm that day when a good friend of mine called me at work & said that he was just east of Bedford. I asked my boss if I could leave early to go catch him. I explained to him that this was going to be his final run on the railroad. He told me it was ok to do so. A big thank you goes out to my boss for this. While waiting for Chip to come by, I did see a couple of trains. Enjoy this short video!!

ROOTSTOWN (10-29-09)

  • Chip is a good guy. It was great that Chip and his son got to work together one week at Canton before he retired.

  • Oh yea he most certainly is. A friend of mine was telling me that Chip & his son were going to work together at the time but wasn't 100% sure. I'm glad he had the chance to do that.

  • Good to know as I live right up the street! :-) Diamond St in Ravenna seems like the perfect place as, like you said, you can watch both lines with hardly any movement. Thanks for responding :-)

  • You're quite welcome! Maybe we can hook up to do some railfanning right there at Diamond St.

  • Is where you shot the footage in Rootstown a good railfanning site?

  • Yea it's a pretty good area to railfan at. Matter of fact when I was there filming the trains, a Portage Couny Sheriff deputy was sitting in his cruiser doing paperwork & watching & he never said anything at all. Another good place to railfan is in Ravenna, about 5 miles west of where I was. There you have NS crossing over CSX.

  • That would be fun. I have never really railfanned in particular except my crappy video of Amtrak at the same crossing so it would be nice for someone to show me the ropes. (It was at night and couldn't see anything) I actually live a couple of houses away from the NS-New Milford crossing and love hearing the trains. Was getting into HO Modeling but right now don't have the space so I'm stuck with dreams and Aurans TRS2006.

  • Thank you Kevin-age. Yea Chip is a great guy to get along with & will be missed on the rails. He was about the only person I got to know really well. What is your buddy's idea that he has for NS? Keep up the vid-age, your doing a fantastic job.

  • Reminds me of my buddy that retired from the NS but he invented something new for NS and is touring about his idea! I am happy for him and best regards to your buddy Chip-age! Nice catch-age, Al-age, LOL!

  • Thank you Joe. Chip is a really a good person to get along with. Along with a couple of others I know as well. My apologies for removing your 2nd comment that you posted. You can post it back up here.
