Zone C - Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington DC

Also known as "the Old Soldiers Home" located in Washington, DC this land surrounds President Abraham Lincoln's summer cottage. Its historical uses have been as a tent hospital during the civil war, the place where the President wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, a recreation area for our nations' veterans, and it has been an active agricultural field for over 200 years. The land exists today as it did when the president walked the fields - it is his Mount Vernon or Monticello. It was open to the general public as recreational green-space until the 1960's.

Currently, the DOD is seeking approval to build nearly 10 million square feet of office buildings, condo's, and townhouses on most of this federal land. Due to this lands historic use and unmatched natural beauty, a grass-roots effort has formed to see that Zone C (and possibly Zone B) of this proposal remain undeveloped and re-open for public use again. This should be required as mitigation for allowing development of Zone A, and AFRH Zone - which is equal in size to the Pentagon, and will bring 9,000+ new car trips into Washington, DC's most populated neighborhoods.

Please write your congressperson, and write to the National Capital Planning Commission (Mr. Eugene Keller, 401 9th St NW, North Lobby Ste 500, Washington, DC 20004 or Eugene.keller@ncpc.gov) and tell them to support preservation of Zone C as mitigation for all the development proposed at the AFRH campus. This land will continue to server as a sanctuary for our nations veterans, and much needed green-space in our Nations Capital.
