Recorded in the late 1990's. Lin Chufa (林初发) plays the founder of the Song Dynasty, Zhao Kuangyi (赵匡胤), as a young warrior, prior to being emperor. Tang Lijuan (汤丽娟) plays his sworn sister, Jing Niang (京娘).

As well-known figures in folk legends and history, there is a well-known episode in which Zhao rescued Jing Niang from bandits, then escorted her on a long and arduous journey home. A situation where a lone man and lone woman travelling together can often lead to complications. However, both were honorable characters, so they were mindful of the dictates of the strict customs and thus behaved with propriety. This incident thus turned them into some kind of role models or folk heroes. The more well-known version of the legend that is often extolled and performed in folk operas, "Qian Li Song Jing Niang" (千里送京娘 Escorting Jing Niang For A Thousand Miles), is based on this story.

"Jing Niang Song Shiong" (京娘送兄 Jing Niang Sends Off Elder Brother) is a sequel to the well-known legend, but based on a new script. In this follow-up story, Jing Niang returns as a ghost to escort Zhao on his journey through the jungle. After she has returned safely to her village, the narrow-minded village folks begin to doubt her innocence and start to ostracize her....causing her to take her own life.

Zhao is unaware that his travelling companion is a ghost, till her strange behavior causes him to suspect that something is amiss.

In this excerpt, the choreography is excellent. Tang Lijuan's fluid movements are enhanced by her mastery of the water sleeves. A first-rate performance indeed!
