@rvggarcon that's known as word-of-mouth and is an adopted strategy by many smaller retailers - if you make the products well enough they sell themselves based on their usefulness, aesthetic appeal, etc. I absolutely love this type of business strategy, but to claim it as original is bogus. What I'm stating and bringing to the front is that by announcing that their brand is "untitled", "blank", etc. they are, in essence, stamping a label on it and positioning it within the consumer's mind.

@machinerun58 I don't think that's what he meant, Margiela's "marketing strategy" is letting the clothes speak for themselves. Rick Owens does the same thing, and lots of people still throw thousands of dollars for his clothes, it's because the clothes are amazing, it's not because some stupid celebrity did an advertisement for them.

"untitled" is "unbelievable"

I doubt MM would have approved of this. This is the work of Renzo Rosso of Diesel who bought out MMM in 2002. This is so obvious and silly and misguided, it's exactly what happens when the mainstream co-opts the fringe and thinks they're being "radical." So sad and stupid; what a waste. But MMM had a solid 20 year run of extraordinary ideas and created a new aesthetic. That's nothing to sneeze at, even if it's essentially over.

@machinerun58 yea but you are not going to see an ad anywhere for it.....

this is hard to watch. To claim no marketing gimmicks is ridiculous. What is this in itself? Everything has a different marketing strategy, or else it's aimlessly thrown forth without care and never adapted by potential consumers. simply by avoiding the use of celebrities, established brand name, etc. you are, in that very act, establishing a position with strategy and therefore engaging in almost exactly the same advertising "gimmicks" - whatever that means - as the rest of the industry.

Cute idea. Look forward to seeing if it works.
"no marketing gimmicks" is actually margiela's strategic marketing. no ads, no celebrity endorsements, no nothing, the products speak for itself. consumers are lured into the "blankness" of the house making them curious and once you know it, you're hooked. give mr. margiela his credit for successfully playing this kind of marketing.
