MALTA: Lija - Villa Francia

Malta has many treasures. One of them is Villa Francia which is in Lija.

After almost two decades of being uninhabited, Villa Francia was restored to its original glory and inaugurated in September 12, 2009.

The restoration on the 18th century architectural jewel, which was formerly known as Villa Preziosi, started in 2006 by the Infrastructure Ministry, with the help of the Resources Ministry and MCAST students.

The villa comprises a coach room, a water mill and 10 fountains and is surrounded by large gardens.

It was the residence of Sir Ugo Mifsud during his term as Prime Minister between 1924 and 1927 and between 1932 - 1933. Villa Francia is now government-owned and will be used for official functions.

We visited this villa and took some photos and movies which we're sharing with you all.

  • Hi i would like to ask if this villa is open to tourists or at any special occasions like feasts and all. Thanks for the excellent video =)

  • @11lupin11 To our knowledge, no it is not open to the public. It was open once when they finished renovating it.

You may want to contact the government people and ask them if they plan to have another open days soon.

    Thanks for your comment

  • Beautiful video. Fran

  • Thanks Charlie. It is a magnificent villa and yes, it's a shame that it's not open to the public. Perhaps if you write a letter to The Times it may have some effect.

    Regards to you and Ann.

  • Hello Jasmine and Alfred, another terrific video as usual. Ann and I enjoyed it very much. What a beautiful place. Did I read correctly that Villa Francia is not open to the public? If true that is so it is truly a shame. Ann and I would have definitely put it on our list of places to see when we come back to Malta next year.

    Stay well.

    Best Regards,

    Charflie
