Level Crossings on Bollo Lane, Acton, west London...

Of course being level crossings we also see much road traffic, including some buses.

Other scenes include the signal box next to one of the crossings and a disused bridge abutment from the former District Line South Acton branch. In the background we hear some Underground trains near to Acton Town station.

Although it was not the aim when filming, we see several examples of road users jumping the wig-wag red flashing lights, and even a pedal cyclist dodging the barriers as they lower! Not mentioned in the film is that a few months ago a bus driver was prosecuted for doing this - in this case the reports which I read talked of the back of the bus being hit and damaged by one of the barriers as they lowered.

Road users jumping level crossings is not solely a British phenomena - its global. Some people see it as a challenge to 'get across' before the barriers lower, others are just in a hurry and don't want to spend the time waiting.

The video addresses this issue and suggests a couple of things which can be done to try to mitigate the issue.

Footage dates from the 1990's, 2010 and 2011.

  • @metadyneman Ooo, i live too far the nearest crossing is over 15,000 yards away in Bentley Heath

  • @ronnoc1k8 LOL I've lived about 500 yards away from it it for over 20 years so I know where it is ;-)

    .

  • @metadyneman The level crossing your talking about is on Station road

  • What???? I cant here the level crossing!!!!!

  • It never ceases to amaze me what lengths road vehicle drivers will go to just to avoid waiting at a level crossing. I live very close to a locally well known level crossing in Portslade near Brighton and some people will drive some way out of their way to avoid it when, if they had stayed where they are in the queue would probably have got to their destination in exactly the same time!

  • I've been down there before I live near it!

  • nice, please try to filming more about this crossings, cose it is vrry curios combination...

  • There's ads that need to be shown in the UK, with the message "if you tie, YOU LOSE" (seen some great ones here in North America.......about why you shouldn't race a train to the crossing). And people need to realize....a) trains are faster than they appear....b) they can't swerve at the last second to avoid hitting you....c) even the lightest passenger trains with the best brakes need the distance of a few football pitches to stop.

  • Wait its three level crossings?!
