Older! over 50! Arghhhh. Actually after 50 it seems sex is not quite as frequent (can you say non existent!) so yeah I might be inclined to jump at the chance of sex without thinking. :) Honest answer.
I also think that older people are finding that sex is not the dirty word that they might have been taught when younger -- think inhibitions fading away.
So from what you said perhaps lubrication is a good practice when having sex when older?

Lubrication is a great idea for a woman as she gets older regardless of condom or not.
Very good thought in that because sex does slack off, especially if divorced or widowed, it doesn't happen much. Heck, all your thoughts are logical about it. Perhaps less education (because they were taught abstinence and we all know what the recent studies show about abstinence only and teens). don't know how to use or use it right when they do use it.... jumping at the chance for sex, great thoughts. :)

I'd be suprised if the ratio of unprotected sex vs protected amongst older couples is higher than younger. It's their generation that saw the outcome of the sexual revolution and the onset of STDs, and they were the generation that began preaching safe sex.

I don't know if its higher - like most things sex, just asking folks (especially older folks) can throw them into a nervous tailspin. So... I think by terms of sheer numbers that younger folks will have more unprotected sex simply because they are having more sex in general. But a proportionate study would be very interesting to see if the ratios are similar or who is truly prone by % to have unprotected sex.
But UDM brought up something that reminded me of the abstinence only program issues

Basically - teens today are more likely to have unprotected sex if they learned from the abstinence only program.... this is because they weren't taught about how to use condoms and dental dams so they either use them wrong or don't use them at all.... this is a group of people who are at the cusp really of being taught how to practice safe sex.... and when was that anyway? :)
