John McLaughlin - guitar
After Hendrix the next most influential gtr plyr had to be McLaughlin. Astonishing how many obscure scales in 15/16 time u start to hear after they hit the scene. Mahavisnu O clearly threw down a gauntlet. I think the effect on Zappa was strong. Frank had long been playing very complex music--he's "fusing" jazz, rock, and classical by the mid-60s--but after Mahavishnu Frank starts suddenly employing only first call, L.A. studio hot shots (to the detriment of his music imo, but never mind).

john's birds of fire solo seems to have no basic key (though i know the scales) it sounds like a kind of free levitating, he got endless inspiration from the highest.
