  • After Hendrix the next most influential gtr plyr had to be McLaughlin. Astonishing how many obscure scales in 15/16 time u start to hear after they hit the scene. Mahavisnu O clearly threw down a gauntlet. I think the effect on Zappa was strong. Frank had long been playing very complex music--he's "fusing" jazz, rock, and classical by the mid-60s--but after Mahavishnu Frank starts suddenly employing only first call, L.A. studio hot shots (to the detriment of his music imo, but never mind).

  • john's birds of fire solo seems to have no basic key (though i know the scales) it sounds like a kind of free levitating, he got endless inspiration from the highest.
