  • With languages there is no way to translate directly, any translation is an approximation. Yes it means "good afternoon" it also means "hello" it could also be translated in any number of different ways...

  • Konnichiwa means good afternoon, konbanwa means good evening, ohayou gozaimasu means good morning. There are different greetings and depending on whether or not you are speaking to someone above you ( teacher or boss) than you would use a more polite way of speaking. Hajimemashite is a way of greeting but this is used mostly for first time meetings when you meet someone new.
