@EugeneRFitzpatrick Soo Bahk Do's original name was "Tang Soo Do," The way of the China Hand, which uses the same characters as "Karate Do," before Funakoshi changed the first character. Before that, it was "Hwa Soo Do," The way of the flowering hand. Soo Bahk Do was adopted as "Soo Bahk" is the oldest Korean Art, not because it is a violent style. The most important identifier is "Moo Duk Kwan," The School of Martial Virtue. It shows not simply in name but in the philosophy of our Moo Do.
Think about it, do you really want to belong to the organization of the "Striking Hand"? Is that a philosophy of life, "the striking hand." Is that a motto to use in raising children or relating to women, "the striking hand" A name says a lot about an organisations philosophy.
Soo Bahk Do = The way of the Striking hand
Karate Do = The way of the Open Hand
Judo = The gentle way.
By which philosophy would you want to live your life?
