Nowadays this commercial wouldn't be banned for shit. Wow, how much has changed in 20 years... Thanks to Madonna. If I were to see this on T.V. I would not see a single thing wrong with it.

I remember this "controversy" like it was yesterday. The right wing nutbags went nuts over this commercial. And still to this day I don't know why. By today's standard, this video is safe for airing during Sesame Street. I guess they just need something to bitch about. Otherwise, they are seen for what they really are. And that is a bunch of useless fear mongers who want to take your rights away so they can do as they please(see 2001-2008 for proof).

If I understand it correclty, the black man isn't Jesus, but Saint Martin de Porres, although some people thought he was a black version of Jesus. But people were apparently also offended by the music video's use of Catholic iconography and the stigmata and cross burning scenes.

Pepsi themselves pulled it after only two airings when they saw the complete music video for Like a prayer, indeed because they wanted to dissociate themselves from the controversy the video had created with its religious and racial content. So it was actually more of a self-ban.
