Pieces of Fate Ltd is a chess charity for the people of Brighton and Hove. It decided to hold its first chess competition in the Royal Albion Hotel because it is the spiritual home of chess in Brighton (the first Brighton Chess Club was founded in that hotel in 1842). This event took place on Sunday 28 September 2008, on the only pleasant weekend of the year, weather-wise. 77 players entered, including 11 French players who had been part of a 15 strong team which had played the Brighton & Hove Chess Club in the Friends Meeting Place the day before.
Our dream is to buy a building in Brighton or Hove to devote to chess.
We have incorporated Pieces of Fate Limited and registered it as a charity to achieve this aim. Being a company limited by guarantee means that our members cannot take profit from our enterprises. If our company is ever wound down the law says that its assets must be transferred to an institution with similar objectives.
We do not know how long it will take to achieve our dream. We hope it will happen in our lifetimes but if that is not to be, Pieces of Fate Limited will outlive us and the people of Brighton and Hove will see our dream fulfilled eventually.
Our company's Memorandum of Association states:
"3. The objects for which the Association is established are...
a. To obtain and then maintain for the public within the area known as Brighton & Hove a permanent venue (the chess house) for the playing of the game of chess, both for members of chess clubs and the activities of chess clubs and for casual players who are not members of chess clubs;
b. To manage the chess house so as to promote the mental and moral development of people living in the area known as Brighton & Hove through the provision of and/or training and/or teaching and/or coaching in the game of chess;
c. To promote study workshops and/or seminars and/or competitions to enable the people in the Brighton & Hove area to further their education and in particular, but so as to limit the generality of the foregoing, their chess skills."
Unfortunately, Pieces of Fate Ltd cannot recommend the Royal Albion Hotel, which was happy to take our money (£850 for the room) but uncooperative on everything else, even to the point of piping music into the room after having agreed that it would be quiet in there. There simply isn't time to list everything the hotel did wrong.
