yeah... I think it's because of our desire to increase our general well being that we develop any habit... for instances thinking and exploring... that kind of rests on a sense of right and wrong

A lot of people have written a lot of mad, and incredibly paranoid shit. Paul Collins is just one of those people. Try reading serious philosophy of science - read some Descartes, Locke, Hume, Russell, Popper, Nagel, Kuhn, Weinberg. Science is not simply a tool for controlling populations, it is the best method we have (and one that is continuously improving) for seeking truth. Science doesn't have all the answers, but if you want an answer, it does tell you how to find it.

Well, it's not quite that simple. Psychology - and its many different strands - tries to understand the mechanisms of the brain. Psychiatry is essentially the study of treatments for psychological disorders. Psychiatry is often informed by psychology, and psychiatry often feeds back into psychology, so there is a feedback loop between the two related disciplines.
