Ernst Lubitsch cast Chevalier in the Ruritanian musical comedy, "The Love Parade", opposite Jeanette MacDonald. This bilingual song had little to do with the plot (as such) but it was one of the film's most captivating and enduring numbers:

PARIS, STAY THE SAME

You'll never miss me when I'm gone, Paris
But I know that I'll miss you.
You took a lot of pains in teaching me,
Why must we say "Adieu"?

I've seen your mild days,
And some of your wild days,
Down where the Seine flows,
And where the Champagne flows,

You taught me all that a kiss could be
Paris, your ladies were good enough for me,
I've met brunettes, here,
And little brisettes, here
I've lost my station,
And my reputation,
If I've been happy then you're to blame...
Oh, Paris--please stay the same!

Tu m'as pris l'âme

Moi j'leur faisais j'me souviendrais bien longtemps
- d'amour !

  • I love this song!

  • Delightful. I think Maurice says "grisettes" not brisettes...Thank you so much for this posting. As a child, I would beg my grandmother to let me go with her to hear Maurice Chevalier sing. This brings back sweet memories.

  • THANK YOU...... THIS IS SOoooo GOOD
