The electronic steering lock (ELV) complains that it's unable to release the lock, normally just a wiggle on the steering wheel solves this but in this instance the lock was NOT engaged. I have comfort access so no need to insert key into the steering column but in this instance inserted and removing the key was the only resolution.

  • I like the limiter thing on the rev counter going up to 6k because the engine is cold. or is it the 400hp limit for "normaln driving" ?

if you turn it from 400 to 507 and the engine is well heated up - does it move to higher revs - or how does the horsepower limiter work on the M5 ? :)

  • All M-cars now have this feature, it restricts revs until the engine has reached normal operating temperature to prevent damage from over-revving whilst oil & engine cold.

Both P400 (400bhp mode) & P500 (507bhp) mode have this. Once the engine is warm the full rev range is available in P400 & P500 mode with the redline at 8250rpm.

The throttle bodies are electronically controlled to limit the power down to 400bhp. In P400 the throttle bodies are only about 80% open hence reducing power output.

  • ehm.. guys there something called warranty XD

  • Thank god for warranties! The problem I now have is my warranty expires Dec 2008 so I don't know whether to trade it in for a newer model or pay to extend the warranty.

  • I know the reason for the problem.

Your steering wheel is on the wrong side.

  • i think you should only trade in the M for another M car

  • how shitty would it be to get that error while doing 160 down the highway?

  • ding ing ing ing ing

  • I HATE THIS. My M6 is sitting in my driveway as I type this because it won't allow me to start it. It'll be free to fix but what a pain in the ass. I wish I could just put the key in and fix it like this guy haha.

  • Typical SHIT german quality, you will suffer endless electrical glitches as well as trim problems on modern BMWs and VWs, they are terrible cars!!!!

  • it´s about 80% a Software error if not it is the Steering lock motor ist about 120 Euros its quite easy to install

  • In Poland we say BMW Będziesz miał wydatki witch stands for you will be have expenses. Have you tried in service and asking for a cost?

  • you move the steering as strong as you can .

  • Mmmm, now I know the answer I always wondered about :)

    Thanks a lot.

and the rev limiter thing - clever! one thing I hate about letting friends try out the 335i - "hey, the turbos kick in way too late, don't they?" - yes, revving it like mad when it's cold really helps :/

and the warranty thing - if you're into tinkering with the car, there's nothing to void then :D
