Here's another song that Ry Cooder has turned into a classic. Teardrops Will Fall - yet another gem from the Record Plant. This one is credited to Dickey Doo and Marion Smith - the Archies and Gorillaz of their day... Dickey Doo was the alias of Gerry Granahan - enabling him to wriggle out of various contractural obligations to various record labels. (He and his band were Dickey Doo and the Dont's.) Wasn't Marion Smith a showjumper? Ry Cooder, Record Plant, Sausalito 1974 - with Jim Keltner on drums, Milt Holland on percussion, Russ Titelman on bass, Bobby King, Cliff Givens and Gene Mumford on vocals. www.rycooderstuff.co.uk

  • Interesting. Thanks for this. Of course, not every Marion is a Maid. John Wayne, for example, was a Duke...

  • @anahata2009 Great song, also recorded by Wilson Pickett.

  • Great upload, great song! Have to say most musicians have their a few years when they are at their peak and live off it for the rest of their careers. But as far as I am concerned Ry Cooder is one of those few musicians who is as good and relevant today as he was when he started out in the '60 in the Rising Sons with Taj Mahal.

  • Actually, "Marion Smith" was my father. That is actually his sister's name, which he used because he was already associated with ASCAP, and this song was listed with BMI (or vice versa. I can't recall which), and composers couldn't be associated with both organizations at the time (which may still be the case, I'm not sure). He also wrote The Men in My Little Girl's Life, which was recorded much earlier by Mike Douglas and Tex Ritter. Teardops was recorded also by Linda Ronsatdt and Mellencamp.

  • what a killin sound

  • Wolfgang's Vault has the audio of this. Extremely good quality. This is one of my favorite periods of Ry's.

  • @Romac024 That is supposedly Cooder's first electric.. He's had that Strat since 1967, and it's gone through lots of mods over the years. In recent years he's had it set up with a Bigsby tailpiece, a reproduction Bigsby 8 string steel guitar pickup at the bridge, and a Teisco pickup in the neck position.

  • Beautiful! Wish the sound quality was better...still enjoyed it though!

  • ガキには判らん!

  • Is that an early incarnation of the CooderCaster?
