only the higher ranked monkeys are allowed into the hot spring. the lesser ones are left out in the cold

It's the culture only of the monkeys here to bathe in hot springs. The baby monkeys bathe in hot springs while being held by their mothers, and learn about its pleasure. And, when the baby monkeys become mother in the future, they would take their child in hot springs as their mothers did so formerly.
