U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy spoke during the dedication of the Alarcón Advocacy Center during a ceremony on Sept. 28, 2011.

About the Alarcón Advocacy Center: The Alarcón Advocacy Center provides opportunities for students to work in several post-conviction clinics. Those include the Project for the Innocent, which pursues claims of innocence on behalf of those wrongfully convicted. The program recently secured an evidentiary hearing in the case of a man serving time for 1994 murder conviction. The program also includes the Capital Habeas Litigation Clinic, in which students pursue habeas claims with the office of the Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California. Students' work includes interviewing witnesses, assisting with hearings, drafting pleadings and writing claims. The center will also offer continuing on post-conviction work for lawyers.

About Judge Arthur L. Alarcón: Before being nominated to the federal bench by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, Judge Alarcón was a judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court and California Court of Appeal. He was previously the legal advisor and clemency and extradition secretary to Gov. Edmund G. "Pat" Brown. He also served as a Los Angeles County prosecutor, working on first degree murder cases in which the death penalty was sough. He is the author of the recent law review article, "Executing the Will of the Voters?: A Roadmap to Mend or End the California Legislature's Multi-Billion-Dollar Death Penalty Debacle."
