lol I remember my first incident with a blind spot. I checked the right side mirror and rear vision and saw no car. I started to indicate and just before I changed lane, I look over my right shoulder and HOLY SHIT THERE'S A CAR RIGHT THERE.

I was taught to align your outside mirrors with the back door handles, and the rear vision mirror should show the whole of the back mirror.
