Its always fun pacing a steam train at speed from a car, but this was a first for me... the engine had led the train out from Seymour, and was now going back, literally! R761 looks and sounds great, even though it is in reverse...

  • So true! What's more I was driving and holding the video camera at the same time... another amazing feat if it was reverse!!

  • Sounds like I'd better clear all this speculation up... :) If you look at the smoke kensethp12345 (the stuff that comes out of the funnel) it is moving away from the engine... so that puts an end to the idea that it was recorded and 'regular but reversed'!!! As for the speed.. I think rocketboy1950 you should be right, and perhaps for the political correctness of the issue I read the speedo in my car incorrectly and it was only doing 80k's.. Thanx for the comments!

  • All of the armchair experts and skeptics might also like to sight the most telling factor (beyond smoke and steam trails) that being the position of the lifting link, die block and radius rod in the expansion link. The R's are set up as per regular Walschaerts with inside admission; die block below trunnions is forward and die block above trunnions back gears respectively.

  • To all the dicks saying its reversed. Have a look thro out the vid. You see the wing mirrors of the bloody car travelling the same direction as the train (i.e the right way). So if what you say the train vid has been reversed the dude would have to be driving backwards in his car pretty damn fast and burnt out the gears.....

  • @kensethp12345 Explain the smoke then

  • 100km/h ; wooden bodied cars. Have the restrictions on wooden bodied rolling stock been lifted or has this just dropped them in the proverbial.

  • At first I wondered if that was real, but the smokestack tells the truth. Must've not been a long train.

  • Great video!

  • Great Video!

It took me :40 to work out why it was going backwards. =P
