My very rambly thoughts on the new internet cartoon category in the Natuonal Cartooning Society awards and awards in general. And I've now probably made it impossible for me to ever win anything ever. Ah well.
True, true. Awards don't really tell us much about the comic itself, or it's readability. And for every award I've seen given to a title, I've seen 5 other titles of equal caliber shafted. The Awards culture tends towards the stuffy and self-congratulatory. You can almost predict the kind of comics that will be up for selection, which I take issue with. It's no longer about finding and awarding good comics but about perpetuating an image, I find. Hence, webcomics must be "allowed" to take part.
story + art + characters > awards. This is the whole reason that I prefer Yellow Peril to a number of more "popular" web comics.
