In the early 1980s not everyone had cable TV. In Los Angeles a sort of new wave American Bandstand was the alternative to cable's MTV. It was called MV3.

This syndicated music video show featured (1) the latest music videos as a backdrop to (2) local dancers and (3) lip synched performances by artists such as X, The Plimsouls, Lords Of The New Church, Oingo Boingo, Berlin, The Bangles, Missing Persons, English Beat, Thomas Dolby, Psychedelic Furs, Adam Ant etc.; artists that were currently being played on KROQ (Los Angeles).

Three hosts included then KROQ DJ, Richard Blade, "comedian?" David Maples, and "actress?" Karen Scott.

Trivia: Blade and some of the regular dancers also appeared in an episode of "Square Pegs". Bret Easton Ellis mentions MV3 in his book "Less Than Zero".

  • The show actually ran an hour, not a half hour. Towards the end of the show's run, they started cutting back on the dancers and showing the videos in their entirety.

  • That could be. I thought I remember it being only a half hour orignally then maybe increasing to an hour. A lot of fans talk about it starting at 3:30 so you'd think it was a half hour show. Anyway I was only 13 so what do I remember.

  • @crashsite000 I loved MV3! I don't remember it ever being a half-hour, though.

  • Whatever happened to Richard, David, and Karen?

  • Boy, do I remember this. I especially can remember having a crush on Karen L. Scott...at only 11 years old, too.

  • Loved this show. Watched it all the time (we didn't have cable) in Florida. Not sure what channel. I think it was on weekdays around 4?

  • whoa....Richard Blade looks like dead Bernie dude in "Weekend At Bernie's"

  • My best friend and I would rush home after school to watch MV3...loved Richard Blade on this show and we'd listen to him on KROQ 106.7 rock of the 80's! :) Good times!

  • i was in junior high in east L.A.

  • Believe it or not, I do. It was an AM Radio station that played like, 6 records over & over & the station had NO personality @ all.

  • Karen Scott mentioned that he was from England. Last I heard, he was filling in @ KYSR 98.7 FM in Los Angeles

  • I could easily see why........
