As most know, Scotland is noted for its history in its connection with the ocean, and there have been many tales and songs about the men who go to sea and the women who wait for their return. The Fhear a Bhata tune and song (Gaelic: man of the boat; Pronounced: "'e'er ah vata") is about a woman who cries for the loss of her man who has gone away to sea, and she prays for his safety and return. This tune is so powerful in emotion that it has frequently been called one the unofficial anthem songs of Scotland.

Fear a' Bhàta is a Scots Gaelic song from the late 19th century and written by Sìne NicFhionnlaigh of Tong who was courting a young fisherman from Uig, Dòmhnall MacRath. The part of the story that is rarely told is that they were married not long after she composed the song.

  • I saw your comment on Bob Ellis' innovative autoharp vid & clicked on your user name to get to your channel. I'm a 63 year old autoharp player. I love Celtic music altho I have to admit that I'm partial to the Celtic music of Spain (Galicia, e.g. Milliadoro). I'm sub'ing your channel. Maybe sometime, you'll do some Celtic music from Galicia (?).Your music is haunting!
