In this excerpt from a Zoufonoun Ensemble concert, Ostad Jalal Zoufonoun--noted setar master and younger brother of Ostad Mahmoud Zoufonoun--along with Amin Zoufonoun (Jalal's nephew and son of Ostad Mahmoud Zoufonoun) and the percussionist Ardeshir Fahimi, perform a setar duet of Habib Zoufonoun's pishdaramad (slow rhythmic introductory piece) in the avaz (mode) of Bayateh Tork.
Habib Zoufonoun was Jalal and Mahmoud's father. Mahmoud learned to play tar from him, and later pursued the violin. Remembering from his childhood that his father, Habib, would play this piece, Ostad Mahmoud Zoufonoun notated and arranged it almost a century later for the Zoufonoun Ensemble to perform here (Mahmoud Zoufonoun fell ill the night before this performance, and would have otherwise accompanied his son and brother on violin).
The picture of Habib Zoufonoun at the beginning and end of this video was taken by Ostad Rouholla Khaleghi, who visited Habib and wrote an article about his musicianship and unique approach to instrument making.
