I agree. Language is a very fluid, evolving thing. The words "retard" and "retarded" have grown to include other meanings, and become a figure of speech that has nothing to do with a disabled child. As a mother, you have to stop claiming that label for him. If you don't consider that the word applies to your son, then stop accusing people of insulting him by using it. The word has changed, don't claim it for your son.

One more thing. I live with moderate Tourette's Syndrome, which was severe as a child. Even though it's not the same, I was called that word from time to time as well.

I think I can sum up how the word is used today, and yeah, it's not really appropriate but I can honestly say most people don't use it as a slur against the mentally handicapped. Here's how it breaks down. A retarded person is a mentally handicapped person who has disabilities in life simply because their brains didn't form as "normal". A healthy person who continuously does stupid things without thought of consequence, and never learns, is an R.
