Ian Hislop recalls his first meeting with Peter Cook, and the time Cook famously invaded Robert Maxwell's Mirror Building & took over Maxwell's office.

Parkinson plays an extract from Question Time on which both Hislop and Mary Archer appeared.

Nigel Havers gives Private Eye a bit of a plug.

  • We need Ian Hislop and Private Eye in this world. Just think of what people would get away with if they weren't around.

  • ian hislop for PM!

  • Was the Cons now Labour......

  • I dislike in that clip how Archer's wife stares at Hislop as if she's attempting to intimidate him and while she might have done a bit I love how he didn't back down. There's nothing I can't stand more than a bully. Ian may be slightly pompous but he knows how to put idiots and sleazy crooks in their place.

  • @50033836

I think he just found her utterly objectionable. On the Question Time with Harriet Harman he recoiled from her and her utterly pedestrian barbs and worthless responses. I think he just finds a lot of people in public life painfully odious.

  • who remembers at least two members of thatchers government going to prison!!!

  • @semigotbanned They'll attack poverty by cutting inheritance tax! Oh, hang on.

  • LOL Conservatives are gonna attack poverty??

The fact that they will never tell you how must give you a clue ....

What a dumb angry little prick!

  • Hislop would probably be a phenomenal person to sit and have a drink with and talk bollocks. More so than Merton I think, even though Paul is more your "every man", I get the sense that you could probably engage Ian much more easily...

  • What vile creatures Lord and Lady Liar were. They actually believed they were better than anyone else and sued all those who dared to question their morals. They got what they deserved. The fines and jail sentences were one thing, but eternal public ridicule - I bet that really stung.

  • Ter be fair now, if he's anything like me, I get uncomfortable looking in anyone's eyes for too long.
