In the world of THE ROAD, based on the Pullitzer prize-winning book by Cormac McCarthy, you're never told exactly what causes the apocalypse. But as we follow a man and his son as they traverse a ruined American landscape searching for food and humans who won't kill them, one thing is for sure — no matter what causes it, the post-apocalypse is surely going to totally suck.

  • Very nice review.

  • Surely, given the bleakness of such a situation, the best thing to do would be to find somewhere comfortable (relatively comfortable I mean) and wait for a comparatively comfortable death.

This may seem a very defeatist attitude, but I felt that Cormac tried so hard to present this scenario of the very end of human life, that trying so hard to keep your young son alive was more cruel than letting the inevitable take place, albeit in a less horrific and abysmal way as being eaten by cannibals.

  • One thing, at the end the reviewer states that the book attempts to convey the message that the future belongs to the children, but one of the things I found with the book (I am yet to see the movie, but I presume the message is the same) is that this is the FINAL generation of humans. There is no more life after this.

This, in many ways, was my main problem with the story. Why embark on this adventure and potentially put your son through such an ordeal when there is no hope left?

  • I'm sure that people still want to know what caused the apocalypse in the film. You never find out because none of the characters know what happened. Viggo's character said, "the clock stopped at 1:17. There was a long sheer of bright light, and a series of low concussions." Judging by how the sun is blocked and all plant/animal life is gone, my best guess is that there was a meteor impact or a super volcano eruption and the character's were far away enough to survive without knowing what it was

  • @YOUareSOstinky

Yeah. I'd still recommend it, though.

  • For me, it was one of the best movies of 2009/2010. The other movie at my top list is Kick-Ass. These two films have nothing in common, except for the fact, that they are extremely well-made.

  • Sick and tired of that light happy feeling? Life giving to much to you and is that smile making your face hurt? Why deal with annoying emotions like happiness? Why bother with the hassle of joy? If you're having uplifting emotions and you feel just to good then look no further then "The road" as your savior. GAY_RUN_TEED! to eliminate all those pestering smile reflexes and completely crush any sense of joy or happiness within 2 hours time. (side effects include eating friends and suicide)

  • I loved this film! It was so realistic, sad and beautiful at the same time. It was awesome!

  • @SkyBennett1 I can gurantee I wont cry
