This song is featured on my new CD, "Maid on the Shore". The CD is available at CD Baby:

This is a gorgeous Irish (I think) song that I've always had a soft spot for. It's sort of a Romeo and Juliet story, but it actually has a happy ending, which I accidentally left off this video...maybe I'll add it later. :) Note: This was a spontaneous arrangement, so it's far from perfect, but I was having fun!

Note: For those who really, really want to know what the happy ending verse was (this is based on Andy M. Stewart's version on "Donegal Rain":

The lord conversed with his daughter fair
One night above as she lay cryin';
"I'll give you leave to bring him back,
Since there's no one else you style above him."
She wrote a letter then in haste,
For him her heart was still repining;
They brought him back, to the church they went,
And made a lord of young Matt Hyland."

  • Beautiffly done, I'm also just learning this song and will be performing it next Monday, after hearing your version I think I can sing it somewhere between your's and Paddy Reilly's version

    Many thanks

  • Thanks! I learned this version from Andy M. Stewart's "Donegal Rain" album. I did leave out a couple of verses (one intentionally, one accidentally). But I'm kind of glad I forgot to sing the happy ending verse; it just seems SO lame/unlikely to me...like it was tacked on at some point by someone who couldn't stand the ambiguity of this ending. Whereas I like the ambiguity! Hey, at least no one dies in this one, right? :D

  • I am wanting to learn this song to play it on my guitar and sing it for myself and only hope I can get it one tenth as good as this. You have the most beautiful voice and your playing is inspiring. Thank you

  • Thank you! It is really a simple song. I learned this version from the playing of Andy M. Stewart (it's on his CD "Donegal Rain". I can send you the chords if you like...PM me if so!

  • P.S. If you learn the song, please post it as a video response to mine! I would love to hear it!

  • I just want to say that I think that you have the most angelically gorgeous voice I have every heard, really. You play beautifully, and that song brought tears to my eyes, I'm glad I can see something on here that is worthy of being on here, I hope you have many more videos.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!! How sweet of you. I will hopefully put some more videos up soon...

    It's a wonderful song, isn't it?

  • i find myself comming back to this vid ever now and again, not hard to see why is it?. great job well done again.

  • very touching performance...thank you!

  • Oddly enough I was thinking just the other day, it's almost unique in Irish Trad ballads for a love song to end happily. Having said that I tend to think of this as a fairy tale set to music, possibly intended as a children's song originally. It's also a very unusual tune for an Irish ballad, in fact it's been the hardest song re learning to sing it, but one of the most satisfying. wish me luck as I'm performing it tonight for first time. I love the sound of the harp by the way

  • I have managed to complete my video, and while it is not a patch on yours, I have done as you suggested and have sent it to you as a video response. Hope you like it.
