Suffering for Tradition

@kittysparkleeyes but the way that some people are put to obsessions about their bodies caused mainly by the media in the western world is also some form of oppression

I don't think this is something the girls want to do. I think they do it because it is a tradition, like footbinding in china. It even showed how it dug into the neck. It may not be painful but it must be uncomfortable. Also, it forces the head to be up so they can't look down all the way unless bent over. I think it's beautiful, but it certainly doesn't look comfortable and I would not sacrifice the movement of my neck for this.

this is one of the few cultural modifications i think look beautiful. though it looks a little strange, i love the way the long neck looks

It's insane how beauty changes when you look at other cultures.
This is one of the less painful things i have seen done in the name of beauty.

Some of these commentors... Did you even watch the whole video? Obviously it is not painful to any of the women you see, nor is it causing this girl harm to remove the rings.
Compared to the ridiculous extremes that some Western women go to to fit our culture's view of beauty, this is nothing. It certainly looks less painful than having your shins broken and stretched to gain a couple extra inches in height, and less dangerous than botox.

I think this is cool, I always wanted to have them

and you what? your ancestors were brought from africa to work like animals, you're still a subhuman

the only bad thing is that the united states is actually in debt with many countries and has aid from so many other.....we dont have the crazy ass customs but we have the debt........
providing the women are 100% making the choice to wear these rings I don't see the problem.
Its no different to body modifications we have in the western world to increase beauty- like breat augmentation etc.
However if this is some form of female oppression I would generally be against it. The whole thing about women dying because their rings were removed is rubbish. If the girl took her rings off for that video I presume she has the right to choose to do so, and simply chooses to wear them.

This is just one view of another culture and i dont feel bad or sad for the girls and women that do this, because its an expression of beauty to there people and apart of their culture. People outside of it may think that its cruel but people have different views when they are not apart of the culture and have a negative view sometimes. Its just apart of their way of life and culture.I respect these people
