Session #5 - This morning was -15 degrees! For obvious reasons Layla did not have the chance to have really good aerobic exercise, she was a bit 'zingy',however, her owner has done a GREAT job this past week with working on her #4 exercises so we stayed with our plan of 'door work' and meet & greets at HER home.

Layla's front door is a huge trigger for excitement, even when it is closed, when someone knocks and comes in it is better than 'Christmas'.

I spent time with 'door work', desensitizing the door being touched-to fully open- to meeting someone on the other side.

The friendly strangers on the other side, knocked, talked, and sometimes sang. All great distractions.

Layla's ;leash was never tight, and she had the opportunity to make choices, I rewarded her heavily for the right ones!

Layla's owner made such good progress this week that he decided to morph some of the homework and push the criteria a bit. He worked on a known friendly stranger knocking and entering, Layla continued to offer a sit to the stranger and then return to her owner for a reward. Great progress.

Layla is fluent in sit and down, and is doing a great job offering these behaviors. We added a 'correction' today since she does have fluency. The correction was only used twice, and we used 'hey', she immediately loooked back and it gave me the opportunity to then reward her for offering the correct behavior. At no time did this cause her stress or discomfort, but it did stop the unwanted behavior.

Definition of corrections - A correction should not cause pain fear or discomfort, but it should stop the unwanted behavior. A correction should NEVER be used if the dog is not fluent in the behavior, and you the owner have not put the time into proofing in many different locations, with distractions.

HOMEWORK-
1. Desensitize doors, back and front, car doors and doors of stores that you frequent weekly. Touch the door, reward, crack the door, reward, and move at your dogs pace. If there are alot of pop ups then slow down and don't push.

2. Have friendly known strangers knock on your door, have Layla on a leash for safety (you holding or letting her drag it). Allow layla to come to the door with you, and when she offers a sit or down reward. You can also ask her for a sit or down too.

3. Practice opening the door and 'meeting & greeting' a friendl;y stranger on the other side (each session should have 10-20 repetitions)

4. Everyday door work needs to be done.

5. If Layla has had good aeorbic activity then please invite the friendly stranger into your home and sit in the kitchen or computer room and give Layla a stuffed KONG or bully stick so she has something to work on while the stranger is there.

6. Lots of indoor fetch if the weather is below 5 degrees, tricks, and puzzle sovling games like hide n seek, or go find it.

7. Visit a minimum of 5 stores this week, work on meet 7 greets, door work, and coming and going from the car.

  • Whoo hoo! Couldn't help cheering for Layla and trainer. Fantastic series of 5 sessions. (Music great too!) Thanks.

  • @benglis510 - Thank you... we were rooting for her too! she'll be 4 years old in a month or so and is doing well...!

  • How can i stop my dog jumping up when i go to put his lead on? He starts jumping as soon as he sees the lead. I tried turning my back on him but he continually jumps and either comes around in front of me to jump up, or if i stand against the wall, he pushes his way inbetween forcing me back. I have tried standing there ignoring him for a minute but i have to leave to avoid my clothes getting wrecked and my arms scratched

  • @nicojo98 start with our video #1 for this series. Start easy and successful and then build up...

  • is this working? It seems like the dog think that whenever you open the door, the dog has to look out than look back at you for you to give him a treat. xD

  • @digimongear yes, if you read the 'more info' and then watch the #5 1/2 session and #6 session you can see the marked progress. It was a 6 week program in it's entirty, and she is absolutely fabulous!
