The Centre for Theatre Craft, located in White River Junction, VT, was inundated by some seven feet of muddy water when the White River flooded during Hurricane Irene. The facility housed 35 years of costumes for Revels North and North Country Community Theatre, as well as costumes for Opera North and the New England Shakespeare company. The props storage area was also flooded but at the time this footage was taken, two days after the storm, we couldn't photograph there.

This footage shows some of the volunteers and staff working to clean our the space. The concern today was to get costumes out so they can be washed and then dried, to prevent mold from forming. We are hoping that some of the costumes can be salvaged. The weeks ahead will necessarily involve a thorough cleaning of the interior spaces, taking inventory of what we have and what we've lost, and fresh carpentry to make the space usable again.

Speakers on the video include Maureen Burford, Artistic Director of Revels North; Bill Schults, president of the Revels North Board; Lois Jackson, costume designer for the upcoming production of The Christmas Revels; and Ann Fiedler, in charge of the costume facility for Revels and NCCT.

  • Hey Lois, I love the way that despite the desperate sadness of your task, you still manage to maintain standards by wearing those leopard skin lined, jewel encrusted rubber gloves! They are an exact copy of ones that Elizabeth Taylor used when she did a spot of housework. We're glad to hear that this year's Revels were a triumph - despite Irene. That's the Dunkirk spirit!. XX

  • So sorry Lois. I know that you probably hand made a great deal of these costumes.

I wish you all the best. Jim Bales

  • I'm remembering a very specific cream brocade jacket that I borrowed for a show in Nashua. It certainly has not survived this mess. Multiply that times thousands, what a tragedy! Please get word out how others can help.
