What amazes me the most about the Allman Brothers is their ability to make a song breathtaking in a different way every time they play it.
Good to know about the 44 minutes version!! Mountain Jam is one of my favorites of all time.

the forty-four minute mountain jam can be found on their live album 'Ludlow Garage'. Mountain Jam comprises the entirety of the second disc, while the first has excellent versions of Dreams, Every Hungry Woman, and a slightly more experimental Statesboro Blues.

In the hills of Arkansas with just a bottle of whiskey and a beautiful girl in bed with me, hearing this song over and over for an evening, night, and a morning gave one a pretty righteous feeling as well. The musical climaxes were always timed perfectly. Mystical. It was gorgeous outside as well but a lot more beautiful inside. Yes, there was no aural equivalent for this song. I'm referring to Eat a Peach version, but memories and their music fade over the years. This will do for now.

Living in the great plains... year after year, decade after decade... I would pop Eat A Peach in the cassette player as I approached the Rockies on my annual trips west.
There is nothing quite like 20 hours driving across North Dakota and eastern Montana (staying awake all night long listening to things like Frank Zappa, Mozart and the Sex Pistols)
... then ...
...hearing this song as the morning rays of the sun stroke the peaks of far off mountains.
Simply.... Gorgeous.

It's based off the Donavan song. Also if you get the Fillmore East deluxe edition, or whatever the hell it's called... the special fillmore east cd they have out now, it has that mountain jam on it and a few other songs they left off the original, it's great stuff.

I heard Mountain Jam at the Jacksonville Beach Colossium in probably 1970 or 71. It sounded just like Donavan's First there is a mountain then there is no mountain, then there is. I saw the ABB with Duane, maybe 10-15 times, but they never played Mountain Jam again. Then they came out with the Filmore Live alblum and there at the end of Whipping Post were the first few bars. The Eat a Peach version was never the same as the first time I heard Mountain Jam.

I remember the first time I heard this, incredible. Also the first time I heard "Jessica" from "Wipe the Windows...." after Duane had died and Dickey played the lead. The ending was nothing but stupendous, it was symphonic and I dare you not to be overcome with emotion hearing it. Amazing music and we'll never see their likes again.
