Firefighters from Lake Station station one and ems were toned out for a reported accident requiring extrication on Eastbound 80-94 at mile marker 12.8 around 9pm on 10-14-09. On arrival it was quite evident this was going to be an ongoing and intense scene. Early in ems personnel requested a medevac to the scene which ended up being Medflight out of Southbend Indiana. After about an hour of extrication the truck driver was extricated and transported via ambulance to Saint Marys Hospital in Hobart on the advice of the medevac crew. The victim was later transported to a trauma center by Loyola Lifeflight due to the severity of his injuries. Witnesses stated one semi was cut-off by a passenger vehicle prompting him to slam on his brakes, the semi mangled in the wreck plowed into the rear of the semi that had been cut-off. The driver of the second semi sustained minor injuries. Incredible job by Lake Station Firefighters and EMS!!!
