At the beginning your child's sign may not be correct, but be encouraged that this is the beginning of learning a language. In time, with persisitance, you will see success. In working with handicap children myself, I see the results. How beautiful it is when your child starts to sign back.

I saw your post and wanted to suggest a few things that may be helpful. Start simple by joining your son where his needs are. ie. Most children respond faster when it has to do with what they want/need. So if your child is hungry, start signing "food". Then later, start asking him to copy you or you can do it on his body or use his hands on his body. Voice and sign the word "food" each time, then give the food.

any suggestions on teaching a toddler asl. my son,2, is non-hearing (auditory processing disorder...we think) his aba shows mild hearing loss, but behavioral hearing test shows severe hearing loss.he is disabled and cognitively at 6 months, he has ataxia & hypotonia so his muscles are very weak.he mainly plays with his hands fisted, so any ideas on how we can start teaching him asl or any kind of way to communicate?we are fighting to get him ai right now, he has speech therapy but its not helping
