@MikeGiunta a modular synthesizer is a type of synthesizer consisting of separate specialized modules connected by wires to create a so-called patch. Each module has a different purpose. And by not linking them internally it gives you the ability to do what every you want with the synthesizer. (I'm 14)
Do you mean the purpose of the wires? They are to connect the oscillators to the filters and all the other parts. Forming a chain of sounds and filters that change your tone, timber, etc. Without them, there would be nothing but pure frequencies. It's similar to how guitar pedals work.
