  • No, I humbly have to disagree...Castlevania III is my favorite NES game, largely due to the music, but I honestly think that I prefer the NES version's beats... Most likely, it's due to the fact that I'm so used to the NES version. Who knows...

  • I also have castlevania III on my Nes (the euro version if this game is hard to find, but i got it).

    And the only thing i can say about the soundtrack is that they have done a very good work porting an 8 sound channel music to only 5 without (much) loss.

    But i'm a fan of all Famicom extended sound chip and that's why i prefer a little the famicom version.

  • It's not like the NES version is complete crap. It's just the way Nintendo designed the hardware so it wouldn't support 3rd party chips. I'm sure if Konami could have, they would have included the VRC6 chip in the NTSC/U and PAL versions.

    Personally I prefer the Famicom version, but for what it was, the NES version got the job done.

  • @indask8 The famicom one adds sounds due to the extra chips it had, but honestly, it doesn't mean it sounds better. :) In fact, the additions sound crappy and I agree that the NES version sounds better, too. "DESTROYS" is a big word, but if you're the one asking "who wins?", the least you can do is respect other people's opinions! Or else why ask in the first place ?! :)

  • @AvatarAndKataangFan ... if you compare the battle of the spirit possessing the monsters, you can see that in the Japanese version the bandages of the mummies go into a straight line making it easier to whip them, whereas the American version they go into a wave position. And for the cyclops: you can actually stand on a platform where he can't reach you, which gives you free whips on his head, making it no challenge. That's just a few parts of the game, which makes the other version betterforme.

  • @AvatarAndKataangFan and another thing about the gameplay: I don't know if I'm right of some parts, in which case you can correct me.

    I find the American version more challenging then the original (if it wasn't hard enough :P). For example, Grant: In the Japansese version he throws unlimited knives without the cost of hearts and has the axe as subweapon.

  • Let me get one thing right. I mostly love the original Japanese stuff, but this time I have to disagree.

    I watched some videos on Youtube of Castlevania 3 Famicon music and it just doesn't do it for me. 8-bit music is supposed to be 'just' 8-bit music. The Japanese version makes it looks like some sort of 8-bit orchestra, which doesn't sounds right when you hear it (but that can also be the YT-quality). The American version sounds more nostalgiac to me and more appealing then the orginal.

    At the end of the day it comes down to the music. The NES version is better to me and that's all that matters.

  • @NeoSonicStrike Nope, there the same console, but the Famicom has a superior sound functionality via extra pins that allow a game cartridge to utilize it's own chip to enhance Audio quality, kinda like the SuperFX (For the super nintendo) that allowed superior 3-D and or 2-D graphics.
