Lajos Hernadi (1906-1986) was one of the finest pianists to have come out of a rich Central-European musical culture. After studying with Arthur Schnabel in Berlin and Bela Bartok and Erno Dohnanyi in Budapest, and surviving forced labour service during WW II, he became one of the most versatile pianists active in Hungary and elsewhere, a pianist primarily noted for his exquisite touch. Along with his groundbreaking editions of piano works by Bach, Mozart and many others, equally remarkable is a musicological essay of his on the role of anticipation in piano playing (1947) and his school of pupils including such fine pianists as Peter Frankl and Tamas Vasary.
