@Tubewings Since 1996 there have been previously unrecognized reigns coming to light. Antonio Inoki's WWF title reign, Harley Race winning his 8th NWA World title in 1984 in New Zealand, Ted DiBiase's 5 day reign as WWF World Champion in February 1988 all come to mind.

@josephD32 Looking from 1987 to 1992 (with title strippages/tourney wins included) in 1987 there were 5 title changes, 9 title changes in 1988*, 6 title changes in 1989, 7 title changes in 1990*, 8 title changes in 1991* and 12 title changes in 1992*
* Denotes a year where a title strippage and/or a tourney win took place.
