Atlantis (OV-104) was delivered to Kennedy Space Center in April 1985. It lifted off on its maiden voyage on Oct. 3, 1985, on mission 51-J, the second dedicated Department of Defense flight. Later missions included the launch of the Galileo interplanetary probe to Jupiter on STS-34 in October 1989, and STS-37, with the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) as its primary payload, in April 1991.
STS-135 on 28 June 2011: This is the final mission of Space Shuttle Atlantis and the last mission for the Space Shuttle Program. STS-135 will fly with a crew of 4 astronauts; the reduced crew size allows for rescue by regularly scheduled Soyuz missions if necessary.

Atlantis is named after a two-masted sailing ship that was operated for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute from 1930 to 1966.

  • Wonderful video for my favourite Shuttle. I was so happy when I heard, she'd be the last one flying. When she's in the KSC museum, I'm going to visit her. :-)

  • My most favorite thing I love was this most beautiful peace of engineering. I was crying while I was typing this! I love this space shuttle!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've had the honor of seeing her launch many times, up close. A 2 hour drive and I'm there. Haven't missed a launch in 7 years! I'll be there Friday to give a final *SALUTE*. the weather is iffy, but I'll still be there when she does launch. Outstanding video!!!

  • The title needs to be changed. To me it reads like the Atlantis was lost in an accident the same way Challenger and Columbia were...... which is not the case.

  • @shobonier Me too! STS 101 is my favorite space mission that was

    launched on May 19, 2000 at 6:11am!

  • My personal favorite of the orbiters. Glad it's the last one to fly.

  • Schadeeeeeee!!!!!,Ich werde das vemissen...,Danke für das tolle Tribute.LG. und einen schönen tag:-).
