@apollonmusagete I don't think it's important to be a big inventor when you compose music.Why is it so necessary to come out with something super-new? This is a nice piece of music,and I'm sure that Vasks didn't want to come out with something new.He just wanted to share his feelings through this composition.You rather compose the music than think about how to make it sound new,right?

I'm really not a fan of typical "contemporary music": the kind consisting mostly of dissonance and aggressive patterns. This piece, however, is very enjoyable. Yes, it's purpose seems to be the exploitation of the flute's "alternate" sound making capabilities, but there is a definite sense of aesthetics here. It's just plain nice to hear!

Sounds like japanese flute 'shakuhachi', it's classical repertoire of meditation 'Sui Zen'. Very atmospheric, mysterious and concentrated sound, perfect for prayer or meditation. And it's really full of birds and nature... It's really GOOD music and I appreciate the creations of Peteris Vasks as the one of the best contemporary classical composers.

I went to the Cadogan Hall to see the Australian Chamber Orchestra play Vasks piece Vox amoris, incredibly moving "Every honest composer reaches for a way out of the crises of their time....If I can find a way out, a reason for hope, then I offer it...." Peteris Vasks

The flute's antiquity and sonic variety aren't the issue. It's possible to exploit too many colors and effects in an effort to impress.
