"and they made sure they never looked" -- Yep. But if they were the remains of what was 'picked over', perhaps multiple times, then they HAD to know. And they had a fiduciary responsibility to have looked. It's easy to blame the banks, and they do their own fair share of damage to society. These mortgages had originators. The "Liars Loans" scam alone would probably net at least a few dozen fraudsters.
