this is so true. only a deaf person can give you a sign name if they think you could get one.. lol.

LOL!!! Love it, so true. I always liken it to someone dancing in a club & then calling themselves professional dancers.

Very funny video. I'm in ASL 1 at my college & I went to the Deaf Club. After introducing myself to a girl named Jennifer & spelling out my ridiculously long name Starlanda she showed me the sign for star/s. Another girl came up and I began to introduce myself & again spell my crazy long name but Jennifer interupted me & just made the sign for star & pointed at me lol I thought it was funny & considered it her giving me my name sign I was ecstatic to have one :)

LOL, It's just WRONG to give yourself a sign name! It's wrong! That's like you making a college or university degree out of crayons & markers, and then making it seem real! Completely irrelevant! It's against Deaf culture, and ASL students need to know that! (Sounds a bit harsh, I know. Trust me, I'm not a harsh person at all, it's just my opinion) Love this vid! :P

It depends on if they have a good ASL teacher. A good teacher incorporates the culture of the language users, not just focused on the language itself. They would get exposure to Deaf culture, and different things that are frowned upon. Like giving yourself a name sign. This video cracked me up. :)
